Panama - Central America XV

We were up early for our flight to Panama. The hotel had an airport shuttle that took us right to the terminal, so that worked out well. I would recommend the Barceló in Managua, a safe, well-run hotel. The flight over Costa Rica to Panama City was uneventful and we landed to find Oriel Sam and Rafael Quiros waiting for us with a car. We decided a short day was in order so we could rest up a bit, so our tour guides took us to see the ruins of "Old Panama", after which we rode out onto the Amador Causeway for a view of Panama City. The causeway connects the mainland with a string of islands in Panama Bay. It also forms the right-hand barrier to the main channel for traffic entering the Panama Canal from the Pacific side. From the Amador Islands, you can look back toward downtown Panama City to truly get a feel for the scale of the skyline and its breadth. It is a huge, modern city, nothing like the diseased backwater of centuries past.

We got an early drop at our hotel to rest up for our Panama Canal cruise. Cecilio Gutierrez, one of our missionaries, is now a Stake President in Panama City and was the coordinator for our visit to Panama. His wife, Ruthbeth, works at the Marriott in downtown Panama City and got us a good deal on a beautiful room. Thanks you two, it was great. We had dinner in a sports bar in the hotel.
