South Bend

South Bend, Indiana is home to the University of Notre Dame and the College Football HOF. After a quick exit of the Detroit area, we stayed last night on the Ohio-Indiana border along the I80-90 corridor. Lots of large trucks on that highway. The HOF was smaller than I thought it would be, but full of interesting memorabilia and things that brought back old memories from my "youth". Well worth the visit. One of the "hands-on" areas was a set of training and skill stations where you could score yourself. Then upon finishing, you add up your scores and determine if you are a HOF'er, an All-American, etc. Naturally, KR, with her competitive nature, had to try it out (by the way, she was one point from HOF'er - she is quite the woman). Check out the video of her "agility test". They have a partial astroturf field in front of the building were you can throw around the 'ole pigskin.

It took us some time to find our way from the HOF to the campus of Notre Dame. I had to ask directions several times. I am usually good about getting quickly mentally oriented as to the layout of a location, even if I am relatively new in town, but South Bend threw me for some reason and Notre Dame just wasn't where it should be! Hard to miss a 1300-acre campus! But we finally spotted the sides of the football stadium. It really is a beautiful setting with the lakes and the golf courses surrounding it. Lots of old trees and manicured landscaping. The Golden Dome on the Main Building (that is what they call it) is breathtaking. I had never really focused on why they called the mural "Touchdown Jesus", but it does become clear when you see the size of the mural on what must be a 5 or 6 story building, then notice that it fronts the football stadium across a smallish grass commons AND His arms appear to be raised in the signal for a touchdown.
