St. George 3

On March 27, just before we left St. George, we took a ride out to Toroweap, a place I have been wanting to visit for some time. There are two ways to get there, one from the Pipe Springs, AZ area and the other on a road directly south out of St. George. Both involve passage over 60 miles or so of gravel road (actually not bad gravel) and then a little more interesting stretch over 4WD-ish road to the edge of the abyss. It was a beautiful day and we only saw a few fellow visitors. You pass through the new Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and then into Grand Canyon NP. We had a nice picnic lunch and then did a little exploring. This is the Grand Canyon without the asphalt trails and a visitor center. Also without railings. I am a little spooked by heights, so we let Monte do the crawl (he wanted to) on his stomach up to the very edge to take a peek. A world-class spot and one gets the feeling not many people have ever been there. Thanks to Allen Hackworth for treating us with the use of his truck. Check it out.
