Mike & KR's Great Adventure

Wow - 57 years and counting. Life goes so quickly....a blur sometimes. There are some not-so-good things about getting old. When I was in Utah last week, I got my hair cut and there is not much dark hair left. But there are some very good things about the process. Over the last few months we have had the privilege of getting up close and personal with our grandchildren. Helping out while Cher was in France, visiting with the Dover clan for Mike's graduation, watching the twins grow up way too fast and Emmett turn into a little man before our eyes, seeing Megan with her "bump".....it has been wonderful and an honor to help out. They are all so unique and inherently good....and our children and their companions are doing such a great job with all of them. In the season of Mother's Day and Father's Day, I just wanted to make sure you all understand how we feel (giving you an online hug). THEY are one of the best things about getting old.

Trying to Catch Up, But Handicapped by Cheese

I had made it a goal to eliminate my blog backlog while I watched an NBA Playoff game tonight, but I am hampered by a sandwich. KR was rushing out the door and made me a quick ham sandwich for dinner. I scarfed it down and was nearly done when I noticed she had left the paper on the cheese slice - those little thin waxy ones on the Costco cheese. It is now lodged somewhere in my throat and I am trying to get it down with water. If this blog posting fades out, call 911.

KR and Emmett Out On the Town

KR and Emmett enjoyed a fun dinner and watching the Golden Dragon Acrobats at the Wenatchee Performing Arts Center. What a great grandma!

Western Byways

On the way home from Mike's graduation, KR and I took a little side trip (shock). From near Brigham City, we headed west around the north end of the Great Salt Lake on some mighty lonely gravel roads. First, we stopped at the Golden Spike NHS and, to our surprise, we hit the 140th anniversary re-enactment right on the day and the hour. They had replicas of the two engines, gave the same speeches that were given so many years ago, and otherwise copied the event as closely as records exist as to what happened. It was actually very well done. We headed north and entered Idaho, passing through the City of Rocks, a famous stop on the Old California Trail, whose interesting rock formations routinely were mentioned in pioneer journals. The dirt road eventually ends up changing to asphalt as you enter the Burley Valley, where you can catch the freeway west once again. Nice short detour for those that regularly drive the Washington-Utah corridor and are getting a little tired of the scenery.

Pictured are the Golden Spike NHS and the replicas of the two trains that met for the driving of the last spike. We happened to pass by on the anniversary of the event and enjoyed a reenactment! Rather than return to the freeway near Snowville, we headed west around the unspoiled north end of the Great Salt Lake through the City of Rocks and crossed the California Trail. Interesting country!

Hats Off To Mike

We spend a pleasant few days in Utah in early May enjoying Mike's graduation and visiting family. President Monson was the speaker at the commencement and received an honorary degree. Olivia agreed it was a thumbs-up event.
